Hindi is in the Indo-Aryan group of Indo-European languages. The Indian Union has made Hindi its official language since 1950. According to the Indian Constitution, Hindi in the Devanagari script is the official language of the Union. Among other states, Hindi is spoken by Bihar, Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. As a native language, Hindi is spoken by more than 260 million people across the world. Around 120 million people also speak Hindi as a second language. Since Hindi has such a large number of speakers across the globe, it is the fourth most spoken language in the world, following English, Chinese, and Spanish.
